How to disable old Wi-Fi:

  1. From a PC connect to the old Wi-Fi
  2. Log into the old Wi-Fi router
    1. Find the old Wi-Fi router’s admin login
      • First look under the router it should be listed on the sticker. It’s usually one of the following: 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1
      • Put this number in your browser: http://192.168.0.1 OR http://192.168.1.1
      • You will now be at the old Wi-Fi router admin page – skip down to

      1. Windows
      2. Hit CTRL-R on your keyboard
      3. Type ‘cmd’ in the Run window:
        • Hit Enter to open a DOS Command Prompt (black window)
        • Type > ipconfig in the Command Prompt, and hit Enter
          • Write down the Wireless LAN adapter Default Gateway:
          • Put this number into your browsers URL bar:
          • Hit Enter, and then you should be at your old Wi-Fi router’s login page. Hopefully you have the login ID & password, but usually it’s one of the following:
            • admin / admin
            • admin / password
            • root / password
          • Don’t forget to ask Google for the password if you can’t login – search for your router model + ‘how to login‘ or ‘password to login‘…most of the time you’ll find it.
      4. macOS
      5. Open System Preferences
        • Click Network
          • Select the connected Wi-Fi (green) in the left frame
          • Click on Advanced
          • Select the TCP/IP tab
            • Copy the Router: IP
            • Past this IP into your browser’s URL search bar:
            • Hit Enter, and then you should be at your old Wi-Fi router’s login page. At this point you’ll need to figure out how to login, hopefully you have the login ID & password, but usually it’s one of the following:
              admin / admin
              admin / password
              root / password
              Don’t forget to ask Google for the password if you can’t login – search for your router model + ‘how to login’ or ‘password to login’…most of the time you’ll find it.
  3. Disable the old Wi-Fi
    • Once you get logged into the old Wi-Fi router, look for the Wireless section. It’s usually prominently labeled, but there are many types of routers out there, and they are all different. Just know that every wireless router provides a way to turn off the Wi-Fi – you just need to find it.
      • Once you find the Wi-Fi on / off section… turn it off.
