How to archive your Amazon digital content (movies, books, audible)

Amazon makes life easy…perhaps too easy, and before you know it you’ve spent hundreds to thousands of dollars buying books, and movies. This isn’t such a bad thing, until either A) you lose Internet and thus access to all your content (which you’ve paid for), or B) Amazon decides they don’t like something about you, and shuts your account down. I’ve seen it happen, it’s very traumatic, and I can assure you from experience (it wasn’t me, but I’ve had other run-in’s with Amazon) that Amazon does not care who you are, or what your problem is. You have no one to talk to, and if you do happen to get someone you’ll get an apology, possibly a ticket #, and that’s about it.

So, every six months or so I take the time to rip my digital content – which I paid for – from Amazon’s cold hart’d grasp. Yes I may never need it, but if / when I do (i.e. zombie apocalypse), I’ll be very pleased with myself.

Anyway, this is you do it:

All the files you need to download are in the .zip files below.

Audible:

1. Install Audible Manager – do not upgrade it.
2. Click on My Library Online, which will then bring up an Audible HTML page asking you to login – go ahead and login.
3. Download the books you want to convert to MP3.
4. Extract the contents of AAX2MP3.zip to a directory you create for this app
   1. From this new directory run AaxToMp3GUI.exe

1. Tap Durchsuchen

1. 1. 1. 1. Select the audio book you just downloaded (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Audible\Downloads)
            1. Tap Unwrandeln to convert to MP3. The file will be in the same directory as audible download.

Kindle (windows instructions):

1. Download and install calibre
2. Download DeDRM Plugin
   1. Open calibre’s Preferences dialog.  Click on the “Plugins” button.  Next, click on the button, “Load plugin from file”.  Navigate to the unzipped DeDRM_tools folder and, in the folder “DeDRM_calibre_plugin”, find the file “DeDRM_plugin.zip”.  Click to select the file and select “Open”.  Click “Yes” in the “Are you sure?” dialog box. Click the “OK” button in the “Success” dialog box.
3. Install kindleforpc…1.17 (if you have a newer version installed, uninstall it and remove all downloaded books…calibre cannot break encryption after 1.17 so you’ll need to start from scratch).
4. Log into the kindle app to activate
5. Go to Tools > Options and disable Automatic Updates
6. Download a book
7. Open Calibre and select Add books
   1. Browse to kindlw d/l directory and choose a book
8. Convert Books
   1. Choose your format, like EPUB or PDF

Rinse, and repeat.
